David: Stronger by Grace

St. Joseph House of Hospitality resident, David

My name is David. I had an untreated depression disorder that pretty much fought my whole life.

David’s journey has been anything but easy. After a mental breakdown landed him in the hospital for three months, he was released with nowhere to go. Alone and vulnerable, he had no roof, no plan, no peace.

“But I ended up being able to come here,” he said.

And God saved my life.

The place he’s talking about is Catholic Charities’ St. Joseph House of Hospitality, where older men facing homelessness find more than shelter—they find dignity, community, and a path forward.

“There’s stuff here to help you,” David explained.

There are social workers, there’s security, there’s educational resources, housing resources. They’ll help you with clothing. They’ll help you with hygiene.

Support like this is too often overlooked for men in crisis. “There’s a lot of things for women. There’s a lot of things for children. But there aren’t many things for men,” David said.

At St. Joseph House of Hospitality, that gap is being filled with dignity and care for older men who’ve often been overlooked. The program provides social work support, safety, resources for housing and education, and help with clothing and hygiene—restoring the strength that hardship tried to steal.

And it’s made all the difference.

“I’m strong. I’m stronger spiritually, I’m stronger mentally, I’m stronger emotionally. And I’m defiant.”

He credits more than good programming. For David, recovery is inseparable from faith.

Without God’s grace and mercy, I would not be here. The true God and Father is alive and well—and He works in this program. He works with the people that work here. And He helps people. He’s helped me.

David’s conviction is deep and daily.

If this was not the place to be, He would have sent me somewhere else. But God takes care of me. And I’m very thankful. I pray for this place every day.
