Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

April 2026

Core Principle

As we move through the solemnity of the Triduum and enter into the joy of the Easter season this April, we celebrate the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers. In the Catholic tradition, the economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. Whether paid or unpaid, the effort we exert to build up the common good is a reflection of our inherent dignity as individuals made in the image of a Creator who labors out of love.

This month is particularly special as we observe Volunteer Appreciation Month. We often think of “work” only in terms of a paycheck, but the Church teaches that the value of work is measured by the dignity of the person doing it.

Our volunteers—the individual, board, committee, corporate, and parish volunteers—demonstrate the purest form of this principle. By giving of their time and talent without earthly compensation, they remind us that the ultimate “right” of a worker is the right to contribute to the flourishing of the human family.

Scriptural Reflection

Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24

Prayer & Petition

Gracious God, You are the Master Builder of the universe, yet You invite us to be co-creators in Your kingdom. We thank You for the gift of work and for the strength to serve. This April, we ask Your blessing upon all who labor—especially those whose work goes unseen or unpaid. May we always remember that our value comes from who we are in You, not just what we produce.

  • For all workers—that they may find fulfillment in their labor, receive a just wage, and be treated with the respect due to every child of God.
  • For our volunteers—for those serving in our offices, kitchens, and warehouses across Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence, and Washington counties; may they feel the deep gratitude of this community and know that their service is a vital participation in Your creative work.
  • For the unemployed and underemployed—that they may find opportunities to use their God-given talents and be supported by a society that values their dignity.
  • For our Gismondi Job Training Program students—that as they gain experience, they may be inspired by a lifelong commitment to serving the common good.
  • For our own hearts—that we may approach every task, no matter how small, with a spirit of service and a desire to give You the glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
