Calm in the Current

A Pivotal Moment

Our $14.6 Million Milestone

John Hagan

John M. Hagan

President, Board of Directors

With hours to go before Catholic Charities closed the books this past fiscal year, our valued supporters vaulted us over our original $13 million goal for our capital campaign, the Campaign for Compassion Corner, raising more than $14.6 million.

That’s a multimillion-dollar investment in the lives of those we serve, who are facing crises of mind, body, and spirit.

These campaign funds made it possible for us to expand holistic programming that puts thousands on a path to find self-sufficiency through sustainable solutions.  We have invested in this approach to service because we know help today that creates resiliency and can enhance generations to come. There is no way to overstate the importance of this milestone as a pivotal moment in the agency’s history. These campaign monies provide a framework that, with future support, will allow us to set a service trend that is meant to strengthen and heal and not just bandage over.

This support has fueled renovations at our new downtown headquarters and has expanded or established key services, including Crisis Case Management, the Gismondi Job Training Program, Mental Wellness and Counseling, and an indoor dining facility to invite those without food or shelter to a place of dignity and advanced care.

For Catholic Charities, it’s a community endorsement of our leadership and expertise in creating long-term solutions in a culture of care and compassion.

Thank you.

Calm In the Current

Driving Solution-Based Help in a Time of Uncertainty

Susan Rauscher

Susan Rauscher

Chief Executive Officer

During the high tide of Covid-19, many of us saw the strain on systems designed to help those in distress and watched as a new population in need ricocheted from crisis to crisis.

We saw massive job cuts, limited access to quality health care, and loss of safe housing.

In response, Catholic Charities ramped up efforts to drive solution-based help and doubled down on an advanced level of whole-person care to meet emerging need and elevate those in pain to positions of self-sufficiency.

We envisioned expanded access to our medical and dental teams, job training for careers with living wages, early mental health access, and an indoor dining facility to provide meals with dignity.

The timing couldn’t be better or more needed in this season of uncertainty.

Right now, an unpredictable economy and deep cuts to human services agencies are resulting in even larger populations in distress with fewer resources to help.

Because our supporters believe in the power of long-term solutions, we remain calm in the current – in the current that threatens to overwhelm many in our region and in this current unsettling atmosphere.

Thanks to you, we guide our neighbors with steady hands and steadfast hearts.

Program Highlight

Crisis Case management

When crisis strikes, our Crisis Case Management team steps in to meet urgent needs. We provide a lifeline—securing emergency housing, covering rent, or offering safe transport—to prevent escalation and start the path to safety and stability, one critical step at a time.

It’s about restoring safety and empowering people to rebuild their lives—one critical step at a time.

Stopping
the Cycle of Homelessness

Periods of crisis can quickly unravel the stability of housing. A health emergency, mental health struggle, job loss, or family challenge can be the tipping point between keeping a home and losing one.

That’s where Catholic Charities steps in.

Our Crisis Case Management team is dedicated to serving people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We meet each person at their point of need, working through assessment, intervention, planning, and ongoing support to stabilize housing and address the underlying challenges that threaten it.

Often, the first connection happens in our new indoor dining space in Downtown Pittsburgh, a collaborative effort with our neighbor, the Red Door. A meal provides immediate comfort and opens the door for conversations about housing struggles and other urgent needs. After assessing needs and options, our team can link guests with other Catholic Charities’ resources like counseling, free health care, and/or job training.

By recognizing that crises rarely happen one at a time, Catholic Charities provides the structure and compassion to untangle urgent challenges. This approach transforms moments of uncertainty into opportunities for stability, healing, and renewed hope—beginning with the security of a safe place to call home.

A meal can ease hunger, but it can also open the door to safety, dignity, and hope.

How a Meal Leads to a Home

She walked into our new indoor dining space just after breakfast began. While many guests ask about coffee or a meal, her first words were different: She asked for help finding safety – for her and her toddler.

Fleeing domestic violence, she had found temporary refuge in a women’s shelter, but the situation there had grown tense. Unsure if she would be allowed to stay, she faced the very real possibility of being turned out once again with her baby in her arms and nowhere to go.

In that moment of uncertainty, our team sat down with her, listened, and connected her to Crisis Case Management. Together, they began the difficult but hopeful work of charting a path forward. We helped her apply for childcare assistance, look for employment, and explore housing options. Progress hasn’t come overnight, but her determination has never wavered. With the support of our team, she has found a full-time job and has now moved into a home of her own.

Her story reminds us why we built this space. A meal can ease hunger, but it can also open the door to safety, dignity, and hope. In moments like this, our dining hall becomes a bridge where someone who arrives with nothing more than a question can find support, compassion, and the chance to begin again.

Susan Rauscher and Bishop David Zubik

Honoring Faithful Leadership

Catholic Charities extends heartfelt gratitude to Bishop David Zubik, who retired at the conclusion of this fiscal year after 17 years of faithful leadership as shepherd of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Throughout his tenure, Bishop Zubik was a visionary supporter of Catholic Charities, guiding and encouraging our mission to serve the most vulnerable with compassion and dignity. His steadfast belief in the power of the Church’s charitable outreach helped us expand programs, embrace innovation, and strengthen our commitment to meeting people where they are.

While his retirement marks the close of one chapter, we are deeply encouraged that Bishop Zubik will continue to walk alongside us in his new role as a Catholic Charities volunteer. His presence, wisdom, and servant leadership will remain a source of inspiration.

At the same time, we warmly welcome Bishop Mark Eckman and look forward to serving together in the years ahead.

A Culture Built on Compassion

The Heartbeat of Service

Our staff embodies the shared commitment that makes Catholic Charities a true place of belonging. This culture of respect and collaboration has earned us the recognition as one of the Best Places to Work for the fourth consecutive year.

Our Staff Culture

At Catholic Charities, service isn’t confined to a department, a title, or a job description—it’s the heartbeat that unites every member of our team. Whether serving a meal, managing administrative strategies, counseling a client, or implementing a program, our staff share one purpose: to meet each person who walks through our doors with dignity, compassion, and hope. That shared commitment is what makes Catholic Charities not only a place of service but a place of belonging.

It’s why, for the fourth consecutive year, we’ve been honored as one of the Best Places to Work by the Pittsburgh Business Times. This recognition reflects more than employee satisfaction. It celebrates a culture built on respect, collaboration, and the belief that everyone has a role in building stability. In moments of challenge and change, our team continues to show up with creativity, empathy, and a steadfast belief in the mission we share.

Together, we build trust. We lift one another up. We find joy in serving others. And every day, in countless ways both seen and unseen, our staff embody the heart of Catholic Charities: transforming lives through the simple, powerful act of caring.
