Catholic Charities to host Health and Smile Day with Walk-In Community Dental Services Nov. 20

Nov. 20, 2025 — Bishop David Zubik, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, is continuing his service to the Diocese of Pittsburgh in his retirement by becoming a regular volunteer at Catholic Charities.

“I am looking forward to serving the beautiful mission of Catholic Charities and spreading the compassion, healing and hope that is inspired by the Gospel message and the example of Jesus Christ,” said Zubik.

The former Bishop of Pittsburgh will serve meals in the indoor dining facility and drop-in center Catholic Charities recently opened in their new location at 111 Blvd. of the Allies. The dining facility and drop-in center was created to invite people experiencing homelessness indoors to eat a meal provided by the neighboring Red Door Ministry, while gaining direct access to Catholic Charities’ supportive services. Since its opening in early May, the facility has welcomed more than 200 visitors daily.

“In collaboration with the Red Door, we are addressing a growing need in our community related to food insecurity. By inviting guests into our new dining facility, we also engage them with our case management team and other supportive services to help them chart a path to future stability,” said Susan Rauscher, CEO of Catholic Charities.

Bishop Zubik will be helping in a variety of ways including serving meals, holding group prayer, playing board games with clients, and blessing rosaries.

One of Bishop Zubik’s first days as a volunteer is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Nov. 20 during a new event, Catholic Charities Health and Smile Day. Open to community members in need of walk-up dental services, Catholic Charities hopes to impact people who need quick access to services by creating low barrier opportunities. Dental services include hygiene, endodontics, periodontics, prostheses/crowns and oral surgery assessments.

“We are very excited to offer these valuable services to individuals in our new location. We expanded our dental clinic when we relocated to our new location to serve the growing demand,” said Rauscher.  Catholic Charities Dental Team, along with its volunteer corps of providers are prepared to serve as many as 30 patients starting at 8 a.m. that day.

Since its inception in 1910, Catholic Charities Pittsburgh has been a resource for those in need. Throughout a century of service, Catholic Charities has evolved, growing outreach beyond transactional one-time assistance to providing long-term solutions for clients through a holistic continuum of care.
