Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

December 2025

Core Principle

As winter’s chill settles in and Advent invites us to prepare for Christ’s coming, we are reminded that Jesus entered the world in poverty—born in a humble manger, dependent on the care of others. The Catholic Social Teaching principle of Option for the Poor and Vulnerable calls us to make a deliberate choice to stand with those who are most in need, especially during this season of hope and generosity.

This principle is not about charity alone; it is about justice. It challenges us to examine our priorities and ensure that the voices of the marginalized are heard, their dignity upheld, and their needs met. In a world where many face hunger, homelessness, and isolation—especially in the harshness of winter—we are called to respond with compassion and solidarity.

To choose the poor is to choose Christ. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us, “If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice.” Advent and Christmas are not only times of celebration but also opportunities to embody the love of God through concrete acts of mercy.

Scriptural Reflection

Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.

Matthew 25:40

Prayer & Petition

God of Mercy, You came to us in poverty and vulnerability, revealing the depth of Your love. Open our hearts to see You in those who suffer from hunger, cold, and loneliness. Teach us to respond with generosity and justice, so that all may experience the warmth of Your presence this season.

We offer these intentions:

  • For families struggling to afford heat and shelter—may they find assistance and hope
  • For the homeless and those living on the streets—may they be protected from the harsh winter cold
  • For those burdened by poverty—may they encounter dignity and opportunity
  • For Catholic Charities and all who serve the poor—may their work bring light and joy this Advent
  • For our own hearts—may we choose solidarity over indifference and generosity over excess

Through Christ our Lord, who became poor so that we might become rich in love. Amen.
