October 2023 - Life and Dignity of the Human Person
Human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. As Pope Francis said, "The world exists for everyone, because all of us were born with the same dignity." Our differences do not justify privileges over others. We have an obligation to see that everyone lives with dignity and opportunities for success.
For the LORD, your God, is the God of gods, the Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who has no favorites, accepts no bribes, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving them food and clothing. So you too should love the resident alien, for that is what you were in the land of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 10:17-19
Almighty God,
We give your praise as our Creator, bestowing life and dignity among all people. Created in Your image and likeness, help us to respect the dignity of all people, regardless of their circumstances. Grant, we pray, that we may be moved to protect the lives and dignity of all.
- Help us listen patiently to all who come to us
- Help us meet the basic needs of those whose limited resources strained
- Give us patience with each other, leading us to find unity in You
- Lead those in distress to help
- Teach us to see You first before all else
- Bless Catholic Charities with creativity, resources and opportunity to bless our neighbors
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
