December 2024 - Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

The Catholic Church's teaching on the Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable emphasizes the moral obligation to prioritize the needs of those who are most disadvantaged and excluded from society. This principle is rooted in the belief that every human life is sacred and possesses inherent dignity, regardless of circumstances.

Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’

Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?

When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?

When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’

And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25:34-40

Almighty God, source of all justice and compassion,

We come before You, mindful of Your teachings on the Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable. Inspire us to prioritize the needs of those who are marginalized and excluded from society.

  • Grant strength and resilience to those who struggle with poverty, hunger, and homelessness.
  • Guide those in need to resources for support and assistance. Inspire us to fulfill our responsibilities with compassion, healing, and hope.
  • Grant wisdom to those in positions of leadership, that they may create policies and structures that promote social justice and equality.
  • Open our hearts to be instruments of Your love.
  • Bless our efforts to build a community of solidarity and compassion, where the needs of the most vulnerable are met with generosity and justice.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
