Transition to Steel Shot
The venue for this year’s sporting clays shoot, Nemacolin Rod and Range Club, has decided to switch to non-toxic shot only, specifically, steel shot. For those planning on borrowing a gun for the shoot, this matter is of no concern. But for those planning on bringing their own shotgun, there are several issues that are important to be aware of.
- Older Shotguns: Older shotguns, especially those made before the late 1980s, may not have barrels that are proofed for steel shot. It's crucial to check with the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith before using steel in older guns to ensure they can handle the pressure.
- Choke Constriction: Modern shotguns with modified or more open chokes are generally recommended for steel shot. But even in these cases, it is important to check the chokes for markings that indicate that they are approved for steel. Any constriction beyond modified: Full, LT Full, Improved Modified, etc, should be avoided. Once again, it is best to check with the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith to be sure the set up you are using is appropriate for steel.
If you have any doubts or concerns, we strongly encourage you to utilize the shotguns provided by the venue.
